Americans have some extreme views of President Obama, with a new controversial survey suggesting that 40 percent of adults believe he is a socialist, and about a quarter of survey participants thinking the president is a racist, anti-American and even doing things Hitler did.
The whammy: 14 percent of Americans say President Barack Obama may be the Antichrist. When split by political party, 24 percent of Republicans and 6 percent of Democrats viewed the nation's leader in this way.
The results come from an online Harris Poll involving 2,320 adults who were surveyed online between March 1 and March 8 by Harris Interactive, a market research firm. Respondents were read each of 15 statements and asked whether they thought they were true or false. The sample of people was selected from among roughly 4 million people who agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys and are given "modest incentives," according to Harris. The results were then weighted to reflect the composition of the U.S. adult population. [Infographic Compares Views]
The accuracy of the poll has been questioned widely in the blogosphere. Polls are never free from error, with sampling bias and question types leading to flaws. Online polls, in particular, raise questions about bias.
"The thing about sampling is no sample avoids bias," said Humphrey Taylor, chairman of the Harris Poll, Harris Interactive. "The question is can you identify and correct for the biases that are in there. We have a sizable team that does that and nothing else."
Here's the percentage breakdown of respondents' views of President Obama:
- 38 percent say he wants to take away Americans' right to own guns.
- 32 percent say he is a Muslim.
- 29 percent think he wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government.
- 29 percent think he has done many things that are unconstitutional.
- 27 percent say he resents America's heritage.
- 27 percent say he does what Wall Street and the bankers tell him to do.
- 25 percent say he was not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president.
- 25 percent say he is a domestic enemy that the U.S. Constitutions speaks of.
- 23 percent say he is a racist.
- 23 percent say he is anti-American.
- 23 percent say he wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers.
- 20 percent say he is doing many of the things that Hitler did.
When broken out by political party, results showed some stark differences. For instance, the majority of Republicans believed the president is a Muslim and a socialist, while around 40 percent believe he is a racist, someone who resents American heritage and "wants terrorists to win."
Forty percent of Republicans, compared with just 15 percent of Democrats, think Wall Street pulls his strings.
When Harris' Taylor saw the results he told LiveScience he was "flabbergasted. I would've guessed the numbers would've been a lot smaller than that."
He added, "It means that very large numbers of people are misninformed not only about President Obama but many things in modern life."
The findings lend support to, and in fact were done to verify, themes in John Avlon's new book "Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America" (Beast Books, 2010).
"This poll should be a wake-up call to all Americans about the real costs of using fear and hate to pump up hyper-partisanship," Avlon said after reviewing the findings. "We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing our country in the process. Americans need to remember the perspective that Wingnuts always forget – patriotism is more important than partisanship."
While extreme, there's a chance some respondents weren't even sure what a Muslim is, for instance. Research reported in 2008 suggested Americans have inaccurate views of Muslims: Many think the Islamic religion is associated with violence and religious extremism, and perhaps even terrorism. In addition, seven in 10 Americans in that study admitted they know very little about the Islamic religion.

Yes, but one third (your BS figure) is not "the majority". This article says, "the majority of Republicans believed the president is a Muslim and a socialist". If the majority of democrats professed the view that Bush was directly involved in the 9-11 attacks, then they might be as crazy as you guys. If only 1/3 believe Bush knew an attack was going to happen (which is what presidential daily briefings indicated), that's not nearly as crazy as people who insist Obama is a muslim (without any evidence whatsoever) and a socialist (without any evidence whatsoever). Note that 40% of republicans think "Wall Street pulls his strings", but the majority thinks he's "a socialist". Talk about GOP schizophrenia.
AaronC: 'Yes, but one third (your BS figure) is not "the majority"'. All these polls are BS. That was my point. AaronC: "If the majority of democrats professed the view that Bush was directly involved in the 9-11 attacks, then they might be as crazy as you guys. If only 1/3 believe Bush knew an attack was going to happen (which is what presidential daily briefings indicated)" I'm pretty sure you just called yourself crazy. AaronC: "people who insist Obama is a muslim (without any evidence whatsoever)..." I think he's an athiest. But his father was muslim, and his mother chose to marry a muslim, and he attended a muslim school for years. It is a reasonable thing to believe. AaronC: " and a socialist (without any evidence whatsoever)" Newsflash - when someone advocates for the government to own the means of production (like, say, General Motors), he's a socialist. I don't agree with the "wall street pulling strings" thing .. but there are many socialists on wall street, so that together with "Obama's a socialist" are not internally inconsistent.
Live Science seems to be firmly opposed to anger and threats. As long as it is coming from the Right. Of course, there is no mention of the years of anger and threats, including books and movies written by Leftwing nuts, about jailing Righwing congressmen and assassinating President George Bush while he was in office. Leftwing anger and delusion is apparently righteous, while Rightwing anger is just bad and misguided.
Since Lincoln, how many Republican presidents were assasinated? How many Democrats? Besides, the main point: The vast majority of Corporate Media Channels are Biased to the Right. The "Liberal Media" was a republican tactic to demonize the media and intimidate them in a manner to have them distance them selves from liberal issues. The Liberal Media is a concocted myth. Nothing more. Sure some anchors like Dan Rather were not Right Winz Zealots, but that does not translate into them being slanted to the left. Lets take a look at Fox News. . .
Phillipm asks "Since Lincoln, how many Republican presidents were assasinated? How many Democrats?" 1 Democrat (JFK, by a guy who had previously defected to the USSR, i.e. NOT a right-winger), 2 Republicans (Garfield and McKinley), and one Republican near-miss that would have been fatal 60 years ago (Reagan). Might wanna read up on your history before making a fool of yourself next time.
"40 percent of adults believe [Obama] is a socialist" and 60% don't know what a socialist is.
You mean 40%, since he's not even close to socialist. Not to mention that calling him a socialist is nothing more that a strawman anyway.
farslayer, please share your definition of "socialist" with us.
Honestly I dont believe any of this, I believe He is the typical Chicago Politician says what every to get the vote and does what he wants until he gets in trouble. From a Chicagoan.
Thats just called being a politician - not necessarily having anything to do with chicago. If you're not lying to your people and/or cheating them, you probably aren't climbing very high in the political ladder.
The story here is not that stupid people threaten those they disagree with, people on both sides do that all the time. The story is that the beliefs that people have about this particular person are bizarre to the extreme. 40% of republicans believe that Obama wants the terrorists to win? 25% think he's the frigging ANTICHRIST? This was not a random poll, btw. It was taken by people who signed up for Harris Interactive. I call BS.
And this is why I consider organized religion to be the most powerful weapon on mass destruction ever invented by humanity.
I am not an American but I see them in a different light with what that poll is saying, and that is that the wingnuts are hijacking the USA and it is not going to get any better until they get a grip on these idiots. If the Americans can't do this real soon then I fear that they will be a lost cause in no time and will not be an influence in any capacity to the rest of the world. I mean who pays attention to a nutter other than giving them a lot of leeway. Look at how North Korea or Iran are portrayed in the public mind. I really hope the Americans can pull this off or they will be just another lost cause in the world and that would be very troubling at the very least.
If he truly was the anti-Christ he'd have everybody fooled and nobody would realize the truth until it was already too late. The entire world is supposed to love the anti-Christ and I've never heard of any politician who is universally loved.
How can he be a Socialist, he has all those pens that he used to sign that bill that hes going to make a ton on,lol! A true capitalist! (a joke for those with no sense of humor)
Seriously? Who posted this? They should be fired. This poll is junk and has already been discredited by people who know polling. See the attached article http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenumbers/2010/03/polling-on-presidential-pejoratives-.html Life Science is a website advertises itself as "one of the most vibrant and intelligent online communities". There is nothing vibrant or intelligent about this poll. This poll follows bad poll technique (the responders register to be polled and then win free sweepstake points for every poll to which they respond. The population is neither normalized or representative of a true cross section), and follows an absolute incendiary approach in how the questions were worded and presented. I would hope you will pull this posting immediately and acknowledge that this is not the sort of dialog in which vibrant or intelligent people engage.
